Jo has lived in upstate NY most of her life, but ran out of fingers and toes to count the moves before putting down roots in Herkimer County in 2003.  Jo has been a Permaculture practitioner for about 40 years. Permaculture is an integrated system of agriculture, built environment, and social design based on ecological principles. Jo started EarthSong, her organic landscape business, in the 1970’s and still dabbles a bit.  She has worked at many different kinds of jobs over the years, from elementary school teacher, food co-op founder and manager, waitress, mediator, farm worker, investigator and dog trainer.

Jo has been a volunteer in some way in every community where she has ever lived, and sees volunteering as a way to connect and contribute in the local area.

She lives on 29 acres in the Town of Danube with her dog, cat and a small flock of egg-laying chickens. She connects via phone and internet with her two children and five grandchildren who all live out of state. On the land she is building a timber frame/straw bale house and some smaller structures. She grows lots of stuff including many blueberry bushes, planning for a U-Pick someday. Often she wanders around her land and is in awe of the beauty and interconnectedness of all things.

Jo Clayson became a Director on the Board of the MVC in 2018.  She is usually accompanied by her service dog Ace.
